Collaborative Science Environment

Research instruments for gravitational biology.

Clinostats and time-lapse imaging systems for labs studying how plants, cells and small organisms respond to gravity. Designed and built in Madison, Wisconsin.

Instruments

Built to order, designed to be serviceable

SciSpinner Max two-axis clinostat, rendering
Two-axis clinostat

SciSpinner Max

Simulated microgravity with independently controlled frame and core axes, onboard imaging and environmental monitoring, and a motion sensor module that measures time-averaged gravity directly at the sample.

Who we work with

University and government research groups

COSE instruments are used by university and government research groups in the United States and India, with further international deliveries under way. Current applications include cell and tissue culture, plant gravitropism, small-organism models and ground controls for spaceflight experiments.

Collaborative Science Environment Inc. is a Wisconsin benefit corporation. Our control software is open source under the GPL, customers receive CAD files for sample fixtures, and every instrument ships with full technical documentation. About the company →

  • Time-lapse to video tool

A browser tool that turns the stills in a run's timelapse folder into an MP4 with an elapsed-time overlay, using the interval and start time from the run's experiment.json.

  • Run setup tool: configure a SciSpinner Max from your computer

A new browser tool prepares an instrument's configuration file: motor speeds, run plan, lighting presets, camera and display settings, downloaded as scispinner-config.json for the USB drive.

  • Clinostat simulator added to the Tools page

A browser-based simulator of the SciSpinner Max: set the frame and core speeds, watch the instrument turn, and see the motion sensor reading, time-averaged ⟨g⟩ and sphere coverage before a run.
